To mark the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Assam Rifles and BJP Nagaland organised commemorative programmes across the state, paying tribute to the fallen heroes of the 1999 war, including Nagaland’s own Captain (late) Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, MVC.
In Kohima, Assam Rifles flagged off a 25-km memorial bike rally from its helipad to Capt. Kenguruse Memorial at Nerhema village. The rally was led by Major General Manish Kumar, SM, IGAR (North), who honoured the legacy of Capt. Kenguruse and urged youth to follow his values of duty and discipline.
At Nerhema, the war hero’s parents performed the flagging-in followed by a wreath-laying and homage ceremony. Nagaland BJP also held a Kargil Vijay Diwas programme at Capt. Kenguruse Memorial site in Nerhe Phezha.
State vice president Eduzu Theluo and ST Morcha president Thomas Magh led party members in offering floral tributes and prayers. The gathering included BJP leaders like Medochutuo Kiewhuo, secretary of BJP IT Cell, and members of Kohima Yuva Morcha. Theluo said the party observes the day annually to remember Kargil martyrs, and reiterated the commitment to honour national heroes who laid down their lives for the country.
Meanwhile, Assam Rifles organised patriotic celebrations across Mon, Shamatore, Meluri and Kiphire districts. NCC cadets, school students, teachers and locals actively participated. The events began with a solemn flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by a drawing competition that allowed children to express their respect for Kargil War heroes through art. Prizes were given to best entries in each age group. The celebrations also included a documentary screening on the war, giving attendees insights into the bravery and dedication of the Indian Armed Forces.
Organisers said the event aimed to foster patriotism and historical awareness, especially in remote regions.
At Medziphema, a wreath-laying ceremony was held by Assam Rifles to pay tribute to Kargil martyrs. Alongside, 30 students from Nagaland University’s School of Agricultural Sciences were taken on an educational and motivational tour of the Garrison. They learned about the regiment’s history, structure and daily operations. The visit offered a meaningful experience for youth and deepened their appreciation for the sacrifices of India’s soldiers.
