Kezoma Baptist Church (KBC) organised the inauguration of a Naga traditional thatched hut along with a Millet Sowing programme at Teyenu, Kezoma village on March 14.
Speaking on the occasion, District Agriculture Officer, Kohima, Kekhrieletuo Yhome underscored the growing importance of millet cultivation as a sustainable agricultural alternative for farmers in the district. He noted that while rice remains the staple crop, its cultivation is restricted to once a year due to climatic and geographical conditions. In contrast, millets can be grown twice annually, offering farmers additional income opportunities and strengthening household economic stability.
Highlighting the nutritional benefits, Yhome said millets are rich in protein and low in starch, making them particularly suitable for people with health concerns such as diabetes. He further pointed out that millet hay serves as valuable fodder for livestock, thereby supporting integrated farming practices.
The officer also emphasized the role of mechanisation in easing farming tasks such as tilling, dehusking, and separation, with improved machinery provided by the department enhancing productivity and reducing physical strain on farmers. While acknowledging that millet cultivation in the district is yet to reach its full potential, he stressed the need for better marketing and value-chain development to encourage wider adoption.
Yhome advised farmers to adopt sustainable practices that retain soil fertility and reduce land degradation, recommending late sowing of seeds under favourable conditions. He lauded Kezoma village for being a torchbearer in agricultural innovation, noting that millet cultivation in the village has increased threefold this year.
Earlier, chairman of KBC, deacon Mezangol Yongo shared the cultural significance of traditional thatched huts, which remain cool in summer and warm in winter, though requiring frequent repairs.
Dedication prayer was offered by pastor Medongol Thami, while Kezoma Village Council chairman, Kikrosa Naki, delivered a short speech. The programme was chaired by associate pastor of Kezoma Baptist Church, Mhasivizo Thami.
