DIMAPUR: Kiphire District Congress Committee (KDCC) has expressed deep disappointment over the recent press statement issued by the Naga People’s Front (NPF), 60 Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency, which it said attempted to justify the deplorable condition of roads in Pungro rather than addressing the genuine grievances of the people.
In a press release, KDCC said the NPF statement appeared to dismiss legitimate concerns by attributing them to a lack of understanding of “ground realities.” It termed such a response as unfortunate and an attempt to divert attention from the government’s failure to provide one of the most basic public necessities-motorable roads.
KDCC pointed out that despite repeated assurances, the people of Pungro have endured years of poor road conditions. It said development cannot be measured by press statements or announcements but must be reflected in tangible improvements that positively impact daily lives. KDCC said that the explanation that reconstruction has been delayed due to a land acquisition survey was described as unconvincing, and demanded transparency on survey status, timelines, funds allocated and commencement of construction. The committee also noted NPF’s acknowledgment that only minor repairs had been undertaken through the initiative of the Yimkhiung Youth Organisation (YYO), in collaboration with Likimro Enterprise and Border Roads Organisation (BRO). While commending their efforts, KDCC said it was not the responsibility of community organisations to maintain public infrastructure, which is the government’s mandate.
KDCC further criticised the ruling party’s appeal to refrain from public criticism, stating that constructive criticism is a constitutional right and an essential mechanism for accountability. It urged the government to provide clear answers on project approvals, budget utilisation and reasons for prolonged delays. Standing firmly with the people of Pungro, KDCC called upon the state government and concerned authorities to move beyond explanations and immediately initiate concrete measures to restore and reconstruct the roads.
