The Kohima District Football Association (KDFA) has reaffirmed its decision to continue its non-cooperation with the Assam Rifles in connection with an unresolved issue involving the president of KDFA and the convenor of the organising committee of the 8th Capt. N. Kenguruse Memorial Trophy 2024.
In a press release issued by KDFA joint secretary (admin) Viliebeizo Liezietsu and press and media secretary Medolenuo Ambrocia Loucü, stated that the matter remain unsettled despite repeated concerns raised by KDFA.
The association recalled that during the 8th edition of the tournament in 2024, the KDFA president had enquired about the delayed disbursement of cash rewards to the winning teams, which had not been released for over two weeks after the conclusion of the event. In response, he was allegedly subjected to verbal abuse and derogatory remarks, including being called a “bastard,” by one officer of the 45 Assam Rifles, identified as Assistant Commandant NN Singh. KDFA said the incident had caused immense shock and distress within the football fraternity, particularly as it involved a well-respected football leader, and added that the matter remained unresolved to this day.
While the issue remained pending, KDFA expressed dismay that Assam Rifles had gone ahead with preparations for the 9th edition of the Capt. N. Kenguruse Memorial Championship in Kohima without seeking acknowledgment or permission from the association, which is the parent body responsible for football in Kohima district.
The association further reiterated its concerns over unauthorised and unrecognised football tournaments being organised within its jurisdiction despite repeated notifications, adding that such practices undermined the structure and integrity of football governance in the state and districts.
Citing the directives of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), KDFA pointed out that, during the AIFF Executive Committee meeting held on June 6, 2024 in Kolkata, it was mandated that no AIFF-registered player, coach, or referee should take part in unauthorised tournaments conducted without permission from the respective state and district associations. The federation had also directed that state associations take strong action against those found violating these norms.
According to KDFA, any organisation or private body wishing to conduct a football tournament within a district must obtain due approval and ensure compliance, including participation only by registered clubs and players, officiation by licensed referees, and provision of adequate security for players and officials.
In light of this, KDFA announced that it would not extend cooperation to the upcoming 9th edition of the Capt. N. Kenguruse Memorial Championship. The association stated that no teams from Kohima district would be allowed to participate and no KDFA-registered players would be permitted to take part. It further cautioned that stern action would be initiated against anyone found violating the directive.
The association also appealed to the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) to demonstrate solidarity by withholding the tournament until the issue was resolved and the dignity of KDFA leadership restored.
KDFA asserted that football must be built on respect, discipline, and recognition of due authority, stressing that officials, players, referees, and leaders must be treated with dignity in order to safeguard the integrity of the game.
