Kiphire District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) visited and inspected district Jail, Kiphire on December 15. During the visit, the “under trail review committee” also conducted their quarterly review in the “legal aid clinic”.
While inspecting the jail premises, deputy commissioner Kiphire, M.A Shihab interacted with both under-trail inmates as well as convicts. He exhorted that there was always room for encouragement and hoped that they would eventually be able to reintegrate into society as responsible citizens once they had served their term.
He also applauded the efforts of the jail authorities, Kiphire and observed that the jail was well-maintained.
During the interaction, the jail authorities cited that the current jail premises was lacking infrastructure in accommodating an exclusive women’s prison block, no proper kitchen and the prison compound had only one single “entry and exit gate” which was a security concern.
While opening the meeting, chief judicial magistrate and secretary Kiphire, DLSA, Mezivolu T. Therieh, NJS mentioned that as far as the current Under Trial Prisoners (UTP’s) are concerned, none of them were under illegal detention and applauded jail authorities, panel lawyers and PLVs for their prompt efforts in referring the matters to the court.
Further, the chief judicial magistrate stated that as there was no permanent session’s judge, the sessions’ cases were being delayed and therefore stressed the need for the same. The committee observed that the overall performance of the prison was satisfactory, except for the infrastructural deficiency which needed to be urgently addressed.
