Kezhaseluo-o wins Angami Sports Association Wrestling title

The 54th edition of the Angami Sports Association (ASA) Wrestling Meet 2026 concluded with Kezhaseluo-o Peinyü of the Northern Angami Sports Association (NASA) emerging as the overall champion in the senior category, while Menuokhriezo Metha clinched the title in the inaugural U-15 Wrestling Meet.
In a fiercely contested senior final, Peinyü (NASA) secured the championship title, followed by Neithongulie Kuotsu of Southern Angami Sports Association (SASA) in second place. Menuosetuo Yiese (NASA) finished third, while Thejavizo Merhieso (NASA) claimed fourth position.
The ASA awarded the champion with a cash prize of Rs. 2.60 lakh along with a plot of land measuring 10,000 sq. ft. at Chümoukedima, sponsored by Tepuleho Pusa. The second, third, and fourth positions received Rs. 1.80 lakh, Rs. 1.40 lakh, and Rs. 1 lakh respectively. All senior quarter-finalists — Vizakietuo Suohu, Khriesatuo Nakhro, Neikotsilie Krose, and Keneiselie Khawakhrie — were recognized with Rs. 20,000 each. Seyiejalie Gwirie won the Best Tactics Award, receiving Rs. 15,000, while all senior participants were awarded Rs. 2,000 each.
The inaugural U-15 Wrestling Meet saw Menuokhriezo Metha (NASA) crowned champion, earning Rs. 30,000. Vimethazo Zhale (NASA) secured second place with Rs. 20,000, while Vimezeto Zinyü (WAYO) and Zayievi Kikhi (SASA) finished third and fourth, receiving Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively. Metha also won the Best Tactics Award in the U-15 category, with an additional Rs.5,000. All U-15 participants were awarded Rs. 1,000 each.
Speaking as the special guest, chairman of DPDB Kohima, Kevipodi Sophie, MLA highlighted the cultural significance of Naga wrestling, describing it as one of the most revered sports among the Nagas. He acknowledged the contributions of pioneers, former wrestlers and enthusiasts who have safeguarded the tradition, noting that the sport once played a vital role in resolving disputes within the community.
Encouraging participants, Sophie urged those who face defeat to persevere and return stronger. He emphasized that modern sportspersons have wider opportunities to excel and build sustainable careers, including through sports quotas in government services. He also called for unity among the Angamis, stressing the importance of overcoming factionalism and supporting one another across the four ranges. Additionally, he underscored the need to strengthen the local economy.
ASA president Ruokuovikho Chale, in his welcome address, described Naga wrestling as a respected traditional sport of the Angami Nagas. He encouraged wrestlers to take pride in the discipline, even in defeat and appealed to lovers of the indigenous sport to continue supporting its preservation.
The programme featured special numbers presented by Visetuo Chüpuo and Ruokuoseü Sanchu. Invocation was delivered by chairman of ACRCC, Rev. Razouvizo Tetso, while ASA Wrestling secretary Zapusazo Sirie administered the oath.
