Khamo calls upon GBs to uphold dignity

DIMAPUR: Advisor for Civil Administration Works Division (CAWD) and Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, on Monday urged Gaon Buras (GBs) to serve society with courage, integrity and dignity while safeguarding the interests of the people. He was speaking at the general meeting of Chokri Area GB’s Union (CAGBU) held at CAPO Hall, Rihuba under Phek district.
Highlighting the evolution of village administration, Khamo said GBs have assumed a dignified role carrying immense respect and responsibility in society. He noted that the red coat worn by GBs distinguishes them as custodians of the community with responsibilities over social affairs and public welfare.
Describing GBs as guardians and protectors of clan, khel and society, he urged them to uphold their office with honesty and boldness. He further stressed the need to respect and honour GBs as custodians of values and traditions, adding that their role remains vital for the progress of society.
Sharing his vision for the development of the Chokri area, Khamo asserted the need to bring the region at par with the rest of the state and sought cooperation and unity from the people to further development initiatives. Expressing concern over growing polarisation within Naga society, he called for remaining grounded in rich traditions and heritage, urging GBs to introspect and examine the condition of society.
He reminded that money alone cannot solve every issue and emphasised rational thinking in socio political matters alongside Christian values, honesty and courage. Khamo also underscored the importance of Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India, which provides special protection and privileges to Nagaland, and said it must be upheld and strengthened.
Acknowledging the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is also president of the Naga People’s Front, Khamo said the government is working for the welfare of the people and that the financial condition of the state is improving. He called for public support to work together with the government in channelising development and investments in the region, while emphasising the importance of stability, peace and progress. He further stressed the need for a collective resolve to work for the good of Naga society.
Meanwhile, president of Chokri Area Public Organisation (CAPO), Vepozoyi Theyo, said GBs are entrusted with lifelong responsibilities and urged them to care for and protect public properties. He exhorted members to uphold justice with integrity and remain impartial irrespective of personal status or affiliation, while stressing the importance of experienced leadership in carrying forward the responsibilities of GBs.
A speech was also delivered by Hünietsü Vero, Head GB of Pfutsero Town. Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Resamu Rhakho, chairman of CAGBU, who acknowledged the cooperation extended by members and said the union has been working for the unity of the people. The programme was led by Vethikho Ngoi, general secretary of CAGBU. Invocation prayer was offered by Kuzhoto Kezo, pastor of Rihuba Baptist Church, while vote of thanks was proposed by Vechosa Vero, vice chairman of CAGBU. Benediction prayer was pronounced by Sekhota Thingo, chairman of NPC Chokriba.
