Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge would visit Nagaland on October 7 to address what the party described as its “biggest public rally” at NSF Solidarity Park, Kohima.
Briefing media at Congress Bhavan here on Monday, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president S. Supongmeren Jamir said the rally would be held on the theme “Save democracy, save secularism, save Nagaland.” He said the issues concerning employment, connectivity, good governance and the challenges faced by the Northeastern states would be highlighted during the programme.
Supongmeren informed that Kharge would be accompanied by Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal, Nagaland in-charge Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, and other senior national leaders. He said the party expected a turnout of around 10,000 people for the event.
After the rally, Kharge is scheduled to hold a meeting with party officials besides attending other Congress activities in the state.
According to Supongmeren, the Congress high command was serious about addressing the issues of Nagaland and converting them into political support. He expressed hope that leaders of other political parties would also attend the event “to see how to save democracy and secularism.” He emphasised that safeguarding minority rights and secular values remained the party’s priority in the state.
On the proposed merger of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and Naga People’s Front (NPF), Jamir said it was a matter of regionalism and “would not affect any other party. NPCC vice-chairman of media, Andrew Humtsoe, NPCC general secretary and co-convenor organising committee, Akuonuo Miachieo, also addressed the press briefing.
