Former MLA and BJP member Khekaho Assumi on Thursday urged people not to judge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) based on the views of a few individuals with extreme opinions, stating that such fringe elements exist in every political party. He asserted that the BJP in Nagaland does not have such elements, and even if they exist, they continue to uphold their Christian values.
Assumi was speaking at the BJP Dimapur district’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, held at Hotel Saramati to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Reflecting on the 1947 partition, he said the observance honors the millions who suffered displacement, loss and pain during the India–Pakistan division. He stressed that the occasion was not political but aimed at ensuring such tragedies are never repeated.
A recent entrant to the BJP, Assumi said there is no pressure within the party to convert to Hinduism. “Nobody has told us to convert to Hindu even after we joined the party,” he stated, adding that Nagaland’s history of communal harmony has earned it the title of “Mini India.” He called for continued religious tolerance and universal brotherhood.
Addressing party workers, Assumi praised the cohesion of the state BJP unit and urged members to remain loyal to the party rather than siding with individual legislators. “Let us sink together and float together,” he said, emphasizing unity and solidarity.
The event was chaired by BJP Dimapur district president V. Shekishe Achumi, invocation prayer was offered by secretary Esther Ngullie and introductory note was shared by secretary Ankit Jain.
