DIMAPUR, MAY 21 (NPN): Kulolau Lazami Küqhakulu (KLK), also known as the Western Lazami Union, launched a free academic book distribution programme for Lazami college students on Thursday at CT Square, Chümoukedima.
The distribution drive, sponsored through a donation by Er. Vitoshe Swunetho, will continue till May 24. On Sunday, the programme will begin from 4 pm to accommodate church services.
Addressing media persons, KLK president K.A. Jacob described the initiative as a “novel idea” aimed at encouraging reading habits among college students, especially those from economically weaker sections of society.
He said that while contributions are often made in the form of financial aid or other materials, the decision to donate books was taken to promote academic growth and strengthen reading culture among youths.
Jacob observed that students tend to rely heavily on smartphones, tablets and digital platforms after entering college, resulting in a decline in physical book reading. He maintained that reading books improves comprehension, vocabulary and critical understanding while exposing students to broader and richer knowledge.
He further informed that the books are intended exclusively for college students, as schools generally ensure the availability of textbooks up to the higher secondary level. According to him, the total value of the donated books is estimated between Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 4 lakh, although the exact number of books could not be confirmed. The collection mainly caters to Arts and Commerce streams.
Jacob also stated that the first batch of books had already been distributed to students from the northern region. He added that students unable to collect books physically could send representatives or submit lists through contacts, enabling distribution to students residing in Kohima, Dimapur and other areas.
Describing the initiative as the first of its kind, Jacob said KLK would explore the possibility of continuing the programme annually depending on the availability of funds and support from donors.
The organisation also noted that Government High School Lazami was recently adjudged the Best Performing Government School in the HSLC Examination 2026 after achieving a 100 percent pass percentage for three consecutive years under Pughoboto subdivision.
KLK expressed gratitude to Er. Vitoshe Swunetho for the humanitarian gesture, stating that the donation would provide critical academic resources to underprivileged students and help ensure that education remains accessible despite socio-economic challenges. “A book donated today is a mind sharpened tomorrow,” the organisation stated.
