KMC flags off first consignment of ‘Refuse Derived Fuel’ waste

DIMAPUR: Marking a milestone in sustainable waste management and environmental restoration, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) on May 16 flagged off the first consignment of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste material from the KMC Dumpsite Legacy Waste Remediation Project.
Deputy chairperson of KMC, Thenusou Sekhose, assistant director SBM, urban development department, high school ward councillor Kelhousenuo Khruomo, along with KMC officials and staff, jointly flagged off the consignment.
In compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules of India, a total of 11 tons of RDF waste material has been commissioned for transportation to UMSO Mootang, Thangskai, Khelerihat, East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, under the free of cost material category for scientific processing and utilisation.
The legacy waste remediation initiative under SBM U 2.0 was launched to remediate 40,250 metric tons of accumulated waste and reclaim approximately 1.4 acres of dumpsite land. The project now stands in its final stage of completion, reflecting KMC’s commitment towards scientific waste management, environmental protection and public health.
