Administrator of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), T. Lanusenla Longkumer, has issued a directive to all Ward Chairmen within the Kohima Municipality to comply with the order from the Court of Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MosJE), Government of India.
According to DIPR report, the court in the order dated May 22, 2023, recommended that the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs adhere to the provisions outlined in sections 3, 5, 40, 42, and 46 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 and Rule 15 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules 2017. These provisions stipulate the necessity of ensuring the sharing of all public notices and other public information on display screens within residential buildings and complexes.
In light of the court order, the administrator of KMC has directed all Ward authorities to take immediate action and implement measures to comply with the court’s instructions.
The directives included installation of devices that can display various community-related notices, circulars, and other information or media content relevant to residents. Additionally, the devices should provide audio facilities to enable individuals with visual impairments to access the displayed information.
The administrator emphasized that the compliance was a priority and should cover all categories of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
