Kohima and Phek observe ‘World Soil Day’

Along with the rest of the world, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kohima and Phek observed “World Soil Day” on December 5 at their respective districts.

In Kohima, the day was observed under the theme “Halt Soil Salinization, boost soil productivity” at the KVK conference hall along with the participants. 

KVK, Kohima senior scientist and head, Dr. Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu stated that the objective of the programme was to create awareness about the importance of soil, management of soil salinization and boost soil productivity for agricultural purpose and re-orient the farmers towards sustainable use of soil in agriculture sector. The programme was attended by farmers, students and local leaders.

Speaking on the theme, ACTO (soil conservation) Zheite highlighted the importance of soil and management of soil salinization for agricultural purpose. 

The programme was chaired by superintend-cum-accountant Moatemsu Jamir while technical officer Dr. Sesenlo Kath delivered the keynote address.

Phek: KVK Phek, ICAR-NRC on Mithun celebrated the day at KVK Phek Training Hall, Porba. 

A presentation on soil health management was elaborated by Dr. T. Esther Longkumer. A video on importance of the soil and the activities undertaken by KVK Phek were shown to the participants. 

Vetha Hesuh, a farmer representative appreciated the activities of KVK-Phek and other departments for their support in the agricultural developments in the villages of Phek district. He also urged his fellow participants to adopt the latest agri and allied technologies in order to improve the soil fertility and thus increase crop productivity. 

NABARD Phek district development manager, Dr. Imsunaro, encouraged the farmers for financial inclusion in agriculture and allied activities. She urged the participants to practice organic ways of farming and other scientific soil conservation measures. 

An interaction programme and exhibition of farmer’s friendly technologies was conducted and displayed during the event. Soil health cards and vermi-compost packets were also distributed to the participants. Altogether, 51 farmers and concern government officials participated in the event.
