Kohima College celebrated its 57th Freshers’ Day 2026 on August 1 at the college courtyard under the theme, “New Beginnings, Endless Possibilities.”
Advisor for School Education, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, who attended as the chief guest, spoke on the aspirations and potential of Generation Z, stressing the importance of adaptability, skill development and systems thinking in a rapidly changing world. He encouraged students to become socially responsible leaders, engage with contemporary issues and use information purposefully.
Noting the limited availability of government jobs, Dr. Yhome urged students to explore entrepreneurship and opportunities beyond the state. He also called on them to preserve their cultural identity, embrace diversity and contribute meaningfully to society by creating lasting legacies.
As part of the programme, the newly elected Kohima College Students’ Council (KCSC) executive for the 2026–27 tenure was formally inducted by Assistant Professor and Student Welfare Committee secretary Medoseno Thapo. Outgoing KCSC general secretary Yeshika Achumi presented the annual report, congratulated the new office bearers and handed over charge to the newly elected general secretary, Wati Lkr, who pledged to serve with humility, sincerity, accountability and efficiency.
The programme was chaired by third-semester student Kekhrievor Dzüvichü and began with an invocation by Students’ Council Forum (SCF) president Liyani Lotha. Faculty members and students attended the event in large numbers.
Principal Dr. Vitsosie Vüpru welcomed the 779 newly admitted students and encouraged them to make the best use of the opportunities and facilities available at the college while striving to become responsible citizens. Greetings were also delivered by ANCSU president Kivika Yeptho.
The event also featured a special performance by Ketouzo Sopfünuo of the Tenyidie Department, while Semurayi Swuro of the Education Department delivered a speech on behalf of the freshers.
The programme concluded with the crowning of Kesanelie of the Political Science Department and Lochumlo of the History Department as Mr. and Miss Freshers Kohima College 2026, respectively. The event ended with a vote of thanks, benediction and refreshments, marking the beginning of a new academic journey for the freshers.
