Kohima declared overall winners at inter-district GHS/GHSS tournament

Kohima district emerged as the overall winners at the inter district GHS and GHSS tournament 2024 with (9 medals – 7 gold and 2 silver) held on March 26 and 27. The tournament was funded by Samagra Shiksha Nagaland where participants from all 16 districts took part in the two-day sports event which were played in three locations- Meriema ground (athletics), Indira Stadium (Sepaktakraw) and P Khel, Kohima village (badminton).


Speaking at the valedictory programme at Meriema ground on March 27, guest of honor, Principal Director of School Education, Thavaseelan K emphasized on the imminent drafting of the School Sports Policy, under the guidance and direction of advisor, School Education & SCERT Dr. Kekhrie Yhome. He informed that the policy will prioritize physical education, recognizing its pivotal role in students’ overall well-being and academic success with key objectives include identifying and nurturing student talents. He stated that the goal was to facilitate inclusive access to diverse sporting activities, both competitive and recreational, while prioritizing the safety of all participants and informed that the policy was under preparation.


Emphasizing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Nagaland Olympic Association and Sports for All, Thavaseelan K informed that the School Education Department will serve as the central point for implementation and the initiative will encompass both government and private schools, featuring experts who will assess students’ talents and facilitate their integration into various sports. Guest of honour said that through meticulous record-keeping and statistical analysis, students’ progress will be monitored, with inter-school tournaments planned to further showcase their abilities and also cited Nagaland’s commendable performance in the recent NE Games that underscored the potential for future representation in national and international events.


He counselled students with two essential pieces of advice: to consistently give their utmost effort regardless of the circumstances and to understand that achieving progress in life requires patience and time while emphasizing the importance of striving to become the finest version of oneself. The programme was chaired by assistant director, T Thechamo Yanthan and the vote of thanks was delivered by junior education officer, Vinolie Medom.
