DIMAPUR, JUL 30 (NPN): Kohima district administration has declared an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in parts of Kohima district and imposed strict restrictions on the movement of pigs and pork products after laboratory confirmation of the disease.
In a notification, deputy commissioner (DC) Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, stated that reports from the chief veterinary officer confirmed ASF outbreaks at Rütsie, P. Khel, Kohima village and Mezoma village.
Following the confirmation, a 1-km radius from the affected premises has been declared an infected zone, while a 10-km radius has been designated as a surveillance zone.
DC has prohibited the import, export and movement of live pigs and pork products within, into or out of the infected and surveillance zones with immediate effect. Pork markets and butchery shops in the designated areas have also been ordered to remain closed.
Pig farmers have been advised to restrict visitors to farms, regularly disinfect premises and immediately report unusual illness or deaths among pigs to the animal husbandry and veterinary services department.
The administration has directed that pig carcasses be disposed of through safe burial as per official protocols and prohibited dumping in water bodies or open areas. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and avoid buying or consuming pork from unknown sources.
DC warned that violations of the restrictions would invite prosecution under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other applicable laws.
