KOHIMA, AUG 27 (NPN): The Kohima district administration, in collaboration with the Kohima Press Club, organised a memorial tribute in honour of late Niketu Iralu at the DC’s Conference Hall, Kohima on August 27.
On behalf of the citizens, the district administration dedicated an inscription remembering Iralu as the “Conscience Keeper of the Naga People.” The inscription highlighted his lifelong commitment to peace, dialogue, reconciliation, humility and moral courage, with references to his contributions through Initiatives of Change, the Naga National Reconciliation Commission, the Forum for Naga Reconciliation and Kerünyü Ki, Sechü-Zubza.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, paid tribute to Iralu, describing him as a respected scholar, writer and thoughtful voice of Nagaland. He said Iralu’s writings and public engagement offered wisdom and guidance on the challenges and future of Naga society, adding that posterity would marvel at his legacy.
Superintendent of Police Kohima, Krodi Rhetso, remembered Iralu as a man of high moral integrity and selflessness whose life enriched and inspired many. He emphasized that Iralu’s legacy demonstrated how conflicts could be resolved through dialogue, forgiveness and reconciliation.
Kevipulie Iralu, son of the late leader, shared personal recollections of his father’s life, education, travels and Christian faith, noting how his exposure to Moral Re-Armament (now Initiatives of Change) shaped his path in peacebuilding. He expressed gratitude to all who honoured his father’s memory.
The programme also featured tributes from Kohima Press Club members, including a biography and poem by president Vishü Rita Krocha, a short film screening by Neithonuo Tungoe and reflections by Alice Yhoshü and Seyiekietuo Keretsü. The Phom community also conveyed condolences.
Musical tributes included Iralu’s favourite hymn “Search Me, O God” and a special performance of “A Supuo La” by Meneno Chücha. The event concluded with sharing and prayer led by president of Kohima Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship, Rev. Dr. Ruokuovilie Sachü.
The memorial brought together district officers, press fraternity, community representatives, friends and well-wishers to celebrate the life and enduring contributions of Niketu Iralu, remembered as a guiding moral voice for the Naga people.
