The 2nd Kohima District Futsal Championship got underway at Niathu Sports Complex, Khikha, here on Friday with secretary, department of Youth Resources & Sports, Anthony Ngullie as the special guest.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Ngullie said futsal was a relatively new sport which has become popular in Nagaland about two years ago. He highlighted futsal turfs have increased across the state, particularly in Kohima which was helping players to improve their skills.
Despite having some similarities with footballs, he said the dynamics of the game was very different. He pointed out that futsal players need to have good dribbling skills as this skill gives players the upper hand in the game.
A football player himself, Ngullie, encouraged the players to build stamina as the new sport was fast-paced and requires a lot of stamina.
As winners of the district championship will be representing the district in the upcoming Nagaland Futsal Championship, he encouraged all eight participating teams to smartly play their game.
He highlighted that any sporting activity requires complete discipline for which he encouraged players to abide by the rules.
The officer encouraged players to maintain a spirit of sportsmanship and continue to improve their game. He wished the best to the teams and later kicked the tournament open.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Medolenuo Ambrocia Loucü, welcome address was delivered by championship convenor, Seyielhouvi Nagi.
Invocation was offered by pastor-incharge, Baptist Church Meriema, Kelhoulezo Shüya, while a special number was presented by Mhasizolie Metsieo. The winner of this year’s championship will walk away with a cash reward of Rs. 30,000 along with trophy and citation and represent the district at the state championship.
The runners-up team will receive Rs. 20,000 along with a trophy and citation. The event is organised by the Kohima District Football Association (KDFA). A total of 8 teams are participating in the two-day event.
