DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has served a 14-day ultimatum on the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL), demanding cancellation of the extension granted to the contractor executing the NH-29 two-lane (Kohima–Jessami Road) Package-II project and immediate restoration of the road.
In an ultimatum addressed to the executive director (Technical), NHIDCL regional office, Kohima, CSU president Povozo Soho and general secretary Rhilo Chiero expressed strong resentment over the prolonged delay in the project despite repeated assurances from both NHIDCL and the EPC contractor, M/S Ratna Infra Projects Pvt. Ltd.
The union pointed out that the project was originally scheduled for completion by January 4, 2026, and that the contractor had assured stakeholders in May 2025 that the work would be completed within the stipulated period.
However, CSU said no tangible progress had been achieved and alleged that NHIDCL further compounded public frustration by granting the contractor an extension until September 24, 2026, despite repeated demands for termination of the contract over unsatisfactory performance.
Describing the condition of the road as “deplorable,” the union said commuters continued to face severe hardship, safety risks and financial losses due to damage caused to vehicles using the highway. The union also expressed dismay over the pace of work, alleging that the project was being executed without adequate machinery, manpower and resources necessary for timely completion.
Therefore, CSU demanded that NHIDCL cancel the extension order issued on February 20, 2026, within 14 days of the ultimatum. The union also called for immediate restoration and proper maintenance of the road and drainage system, particularly with the onset of the monsoon season.
CSU has cautioned that any inconvenience caused to commuters due to poor maintenance would be the responsibility of the executing agency.
Stating that the delay reflected continued negligence and institutional failure, CSU warned that failure to comply with its demands within the stipulated period would compel the union to launch stronger democratic and public actions. It asserted that NHIDCL, the contractor and all concerned authorities would be held accountable for any consequences arising from their inaction.
