Kohima Municipal Council employees unpaid for6 months amid fund crunch

CorrespondentKOHIMA, FEB 22 (NPN):

Employees of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) have reportedly not received their salaries for the past six months due to a severe financial crunch, sources said.
According to a reliable source, the prolonged delay in salary disbursement has caused considerable hardship for employees, many of whom are said to be facing financial strain and accumulating debts to manage daily expenses.
It was learnt that some employees have found it increasingly difficult to secure further assistance from relatives or private lenders due to earlier unpaid borrowings.
The source informed that KMC requires over Rs 67 lakh per month to meet salary obligations for its workforce, which includes ministerial staff, drivers, sweepers and labourers engaged in sanitation services.
In terms of revenue, trade licences remain one of the primary sources of income for KMC.
Earlier, toll gates reportedly contributed nearly 40 per cent of the council’s revenue. However, following the discontinuation of toll collection, the council lost a significant portion of its income, affecting its financial stability.
It was further stated that the council has written to the state government on multiple occasions, outlining its financial difficulties and seeking intervention, but no response has been received so far.
While employees have reportedly discussed possible democratic forms of protest, they have so far chosen to wait, expressing hope that the matter will be addressed.
