DIMAPUR: In a major breakthrough against illicit drug trafficking, Kohima Police apprehended two persons and seized suspected Yaba (Methamphetamine) tablets worth around Rs. 1.60 crore during routine checking at Kidima Prayer Park Junction.
According to PRO of Kohima police, the two occupants of the vehicle has been identified as-Nazrul Islam (36), son of Sajjad Ali, resident of Silchar, Assam and Deben Kumar Das (40), son of Basanta Kumar Das, resident of Silchar, Assam.
PRO said during vigilant surveillance, personnel intercepted a Hyundai Venue (AS01EB0630). On inspection, suspicious modifications were noticed on the vehicle’s floor, which had been recently welded and freshly painted. A closer examination revealed packets wrapped in black polythene concealed within the structural cavities.
A detailed search led to the recovery of 10 medium sized packets, which, upon opening, yielded approximately 20,000 tablets of suspected Yaba. With an estimated minimum street value of Rs. 800 per tablet, the total commercial value of the seized narcotics was pegged at Rs. 1.60 crore.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused disclosed that the consignment was being transported from Churachandpur, Manipur, en route to Silchar, Assam.
A regular case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered at Kezocha Police Station. Police said further investigation is underway to trace the broader network and backward linkages of the interstate drug trafficking syndicate.
