Kohima students embrace drug-free movement

In a strong push to combat substance abuse among youth, a powerful sensitisation programme was held on April 10 at T.M Higher Secondary School, Kohima, under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The initiative was organised by the Kohima District Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD) in collaboration with the school, drawing participation from students, educators, healthcare professionals, armed forces personnel, and community stakeholders.

The event was led by EAC (Development) and Nodal Officer for the Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign in Kohima district, Moasunep K. Jingru. In his keynote address, he stressed the importance of maintaining balance in life—of body, mind, and spirit—and how substance abuse threatens this harmony.

“Winning in life requires balance—of the body, the mind, and the spirit,” he said, setting a reflective tone for the gathering. Moasunep encouraged students to stay rooted in discipline and moral values, cautioning against both chemical dependencies and modern digital distractions such as excessive screen time and social media use.

“Drugs don’t just harm the body; they cloud the mind and weaken our moral compass,” he said while urging them to feed their mind with knowledge, not noise.

A key session was delivered by Medical Officer of the 13 Assam Rifles, Capt. Dr. M. Vikas Kumar Reddy, who provided an in-depth look at the physiological and psychological toll of drug abuse. Covering the impact of various substances including stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens, he warned of the irreversible damage they can cause.

“Even vaping and energy drinks, which may seem harmless, can be the start of a dangerous path,” he noted, urging students to resist peer pressure and misinformation.
