Kohima town soon to get good highway

After numerous complaints by general public on deplorable road condition in the State Capital, Kohima town will finally be rewarded with a good two-lane highway (NH-29) from Kohima municipal gate till new reserve gate stretching 10 km (177.60 km to 187.60 km).
Sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Roads Transport and Highways, the work is being executed under Nagaland PWD (National Highway)– by M/s Vilelie Khamo & Sons.
Speaking to this correspondent on Monday, contractor Vilelie Khamo said black topping and finishing work would be over by March. This will well within eight months, much earlier than the estimated completion period of 18 months where work began in July last year.
He said construction of drainage and protection work would continue for some more time. The contractor said construction work was going in full swing with the cooperation of people, especially land owners of T Khel of Kohima village.
He revealed that width of the road in the entire stretch was seven metres, as per the two-lane road specification, except in one portion blocked by an RCC building.
He informed this correspondent that there was not provision for compensation by the department concerned in Kohima, unlike in Dimapur and Mokokchung.
Khamo claimed that though the detailed project report envisaged a two-lane highway with a width of seven metres, its width was more than that in most areas and even up to 13 metres in some section.
Meanwhile, according to information received from the PWD (NH), the work involved re-construction of culverts and minor bridges, besides providing pucca drain and construction of protection works along the project road. The completion period of the project is 18 months.
