KOHIMA, SEP 8 (NPN): Ward No. 13 Council (Lower Chandmari) Kohima, along with its youth executive, has called for immediate action against abandoned vehicles, improper roadside parking and poor sanitation in the locality, citing concerns over traffic congestion, public safety and neighbourhood cleanliness.
In a press release, ward GB Hoshito Assumi said a joint field inspection by council members and youth leaders found old and unused cars and two-wheelers parked along roadsides for weeks, months and, in some cases, years.
The ward said indiscriminate parking near homes, shops and intersections was narrowing roads, forcing vehicles into opposing lanes and contributing to congestion, particularly during peak hours.
It called for a survey and tagging of abandoned vehicles, followed by notices to owners to remove them within a stipulated period. It also sought strict enforcement of no-parking regulations at identified traffic choke points, including towing where applicable.
Further, the council expressed concern over accumulation of garbage, plastic and organic waste along roadsides and open spaces. It pointed to clogged drains and stagnant water, particularly around parked vehicles, as potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes and a possible risk for vector-borne diseases.
The ward called for regular cleanliness drives involving ward volunteers, ASHA workers and municipal staff to clear garbage and waste from roadsides, drains and open spaces. It also sought clear signage and awareness campaigns on parking regulations, penalties and proper waste disposal in coordination with the Kohima Municipal Council, Health Department and traffic police.
The council also proposed a time-bound action plan with weekly monitoring by ward representatives and a grievance mechanism for residents to report parking violations, garbage accumulation and blocked drains.
It urged residents, particularly those undertaking construction or renovation, to provide adequate parking within their premises and avoid using public roads for private vehicle parking or waste disposal. Residents have been asked to properly segregate and dispose of waste, refrain from roadside dumping and open burning, and keep drains and footpaths clear.
The ward leaders appealed to residents of Lower Chandmari and Kohima to cooperate with efforts to decongest roads and improve sanitation, stressing that responsible use of public spaces and cleanliness were shared responsibilities.
