Members of the Kohima Press Club (KPC), in a letter to the advisor for Information and Public Relations (IPR), Imkong L Imchen, have appealed for the implementation of the Nagaland Working Journalists’ Pension Scheme, citing the demanding nature of journalism and the need for financial security post-retirement.
The issue was discussed during an interactive meeting held on August 19 at the Advisor’s office chamber in the Secretariat, Kohima. During the meeting, Imchen sought suggestions from the KPC on enhancing media participation and improving facilities for journalists, particularly during State Assembly sessions and official events.
While appreciating the initiative, the KPC submitted several proposals aimed at strengthening the welfare and functioning of the media fraternity in the state. It noted that neighbouring states including Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram have already instituted similar pension schemes for journalists.
Responding to the appeal, commissioner & secretary IPR, Orenthung Lotha, and IPR director, Dzüvinuo Theünuo, who were also present, informed that a proposal had already been submitted to the state government.
The KPC further proposed that operational subsidies for Accredited Journalists be revised every three years to ensure meaningful support and improved journalistic output.
Echoing concerns earlier raised by the Mokokchung Press Club, the KPC expressed alarm over the growing public confusion caused by unregulated social media content. It stated that the spread of unverified news undermines traditional journalism and affects the credibility of professional journalists.
To address this, the KPC urged the department to route all official State Government press conferences through the DIPR, which can then notify the respective Press Clubs representing accredited media houses. It said such a step would help maintain decorum, streamline communication, and uphold journalistic standards.
Advisor Imchen assured the KPC that the concerns raised would be taken up with urgency and addressed appropriately.
