She extended best wishes to the State Mental Health Institute Kohima (SMHIK) and appreciated the caregivers for their dedicated service despite challenges.
The KPC also donated essential items to the institute, which currently houses six patients.
During an interaction with the media, SMHIK Senior Medical Officer Dr. Nuvotso Khesoh, emphasized the crucial role of the media in raising awareness on mental health, breaking stigma, and promoting acceptance. “We really need your support in our journey of care and hope for these patients,” he said.
Despite challenges, he noted that the institute has made positive strides, highlighting facilities such as the Tele-MANAS Cell Nagaland, kitchen, new dining hall, library, conference hall, and staff canteen, all initiated to give a more humane environment for the patients.
Tele-MANAS Cell Nagaland, SMHIK Clinical Psychologist, Suyimtenla Jamir, shared insights into the institute’s history, tracing its origins to the 1960s and its official inauguration in 1977, making it the oldest and only mental health institute in the state.
She highlighted the Tele-MANAS service, accessible via toll-free number 14416, emphasizing that it is free and confidential. While many still turn to religious institutions for mental health issues, she noted seeing a rise, with more people breaking social barriers and coming forward to avail services at SMHIK. “Instead of segregation, we are seeing collaboration,” she remarked.
