DIMAPUR, JUL 30 (NPN): Konyak Union (KU) has called for sustained relief and long-term rehabilitation for communities affected by the July 19-20 floods and landslides in Mon district, stating that thousands continue to face severe hardship despite restoration efforts.
In a press release, KU press & media secretary Kaibo Konyak said a delegation of Konyak civil society organisations (CSOs) visited the worst-hit areas of Mon, Tizit, Naginimora, Wakching and Aboi after seven days of emergency response to assess damage, meet affected families and distribute relief materials. The union said the disaster caused extensive damage to homes, roads, agricultural fields, businesses and public infrastructure, while disrupting electricity, communication and road connectivity.
KU said landslides and flooding had severely affected several locations, with Tizit and Naginimora witnessing widespread destruction and many areas remaining inaccessible.
It noted that many displaced families were not staying in relief camps but had taken shelter with relatives and neighbours, increasing pressure on host families already facing limited resources such as food, water and accommodation.
Expressing concern over public health risks, KU warned that animal carcasses left by the floods had contaminated the environment and called for immediate preventive measures to avoid disease outbreaks.
While acknowledging restoration efforts by the district administration and CSOs, KU said continuous rainfall was hampering road clearance, transportation and communication. It added that comprehensive data on affected families, including those in remote areas, was being compiled to ensure no one was left out of relief and rehabilitation measures.
KU appreciated the efforts of government agencies, volunteers, village authorities and community members involved in rescue and relief operations, and reaffirmed its commitment to work with stakeholders for continued assistance and long-term rehabilitation.
