DIMAPUR, JUL 19 (NPN): Konyak Union (KU) has appealed to the State government to declare an emergency in Mon district following widespread devastation caused by incessant monsoon rains.
In a statement, KU said the district had suffered extensive damage, with heavy rainfall triggering landslides and floods that destroyed houses, damaged roads and cut off connectivity to villages and sub-divisions. It said the death toll had risen to nine, with four bodies recovered and five persons still missing, hile the exact number of missing persons was yet to be ascertained.
The union claimed that around 150 households across the district had been displaced, while livestock remained unaccounted for. It also said electricity, communication networks and water supply had been disrupted, while low-lying areas, including Naginimora, Upper and Lower Tiru, and Tizit, were inundated, causing immense hardship to residents. According to KU, Mon district has been completely cut off.
KU said it held an emergency meeting with the district administration and urged it to take stock of the destruction across the district, promptly submit detailed reports to the higher authorities, set up rehabilitation sites and sanction emergency relief for affected households and individuals.
The union also called for immediate clearance of roads and restoration of connectivity, stating that all lifeline roads connecting sub-divisions and villages had either been blocked or completely cut off.
Further, KU appealed to the government to deploy emergency machinery, including excavators, in all sub-divisions of Mon district to facilitate immediate restoration of roads and communication during the monsoon season.
It also urged the government to extend assistance to the next of kin of the deceased without further delay.
