DIMAPUR: Ongthan Phom, a progressive farmer from Noksosang village, Longleng district, has successfully transformed his livelihood by venturing into low-cost oyster mushroom cultivation under the technical guidance of ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Longleng.
Earlier, engaged in traditional farming with limited income opportunities, Ongthan recognized the potential of mushroom cultivation as a profitable and sustainable enterprise. He participated in a series of skill development programmes on scientific oyster mushroom cultivation conducted by KVK Longleng, where he received training on substrate preparation, spawn inoculation, crop management, disease prevention, harvesting, and marketing strategies.
With continuous technical support from Shubhendu Kumar Behera, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Pathology), KVK Longleng, Ongthan established a low-cost mushroom unit using bamboo, polythene sheets, paddy straw, and agricultural residues. Starting with an investment of around Rs. 12,000–15,000, he now prepares 250–300 production bags annually, yielding 350–400 kg of fresh oyster mushrooms. Sold in local markets at Rs.180–250 per kg, his enterprise generates a gross income of Rs. 70,000–90,000, with a net profit of Rs. 45,000–60,000 per year.
Beyond income generation, mushroom cultivation has enabled efficient use of agricultural waste and created household employment. His success has inspired several farmers and rural youth in Noksosang village to adopt mushroom farming as a livelihood option. Recognized as a resource farmer, Ongthan actively shares his knowledge, demonstrates cultivation techniques, and motivates fellow farmers. His farm has become a learning site for aspiring cultivators.
The success story of Ongthan underscores the impact of capacity building, scientific intervention, and sustained technical support by KVK Longleng, demonstrating how mushroom cultivation can serve as a reliable enterprise for rural households in Longleng district.
