KVK Zbto launches ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyaan’ to promote soil health

DIMAPUR: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Zunheboto, under Nagaland University, launched the nationwide campaign “Khet Bachao Abhiyaan” (Save the Farm Campaign) at Zaphumi village under Akuluto block on October 22, aiming to promote soil health, sustainable nutrient management and natural farming practices among farmers.
The month-long campaign, being implemented from October 22 to November 30 under the theme “Healthy Soil, Prosperous Farmers,” is a Government of India initiative involving ICAR institutes, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Central and State Agricultural Universities, State Agriculture Departments and other stakeholders across the country.
The local launch programme was inaugurated by Kinito Kinimi, BJP party worker from Zunheboto district, Nagaland.
Briefing participants on the campaign’s objectives, Wapangtoshi Longkumer, chief technical officer (CTO) of KVK Zunheboto, said the initiative aimed to promote the balanced and judicious use of fertilisers, improve soil health, encourage sustainable nutrient management and accelerate the adoption of natural farming.
Longkumer emphasised the importance of disseminating awareness on soil health management, green manure, organic and biological products, and sustainable agricultural practices. He also stressed the need to reduce the indiscriminate use of chemical inputs and promote environmentally sustainable farming systems suited to the agro-climatic conditions of Zunheboto district.
As part of the campaign, KVK Zunheboto will conduct field demonstrations to familiarise farmers with practical and sustainable alternatives to excessive chemical fertiliser use. The demonstrations will cover the application of green manure and organic manure, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), and the appropriate and calculated use of agricultural inputs.
The activities are intended to help farmers understand the importance of maintaining soil fertility while adopting farming practices that support long-term agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.
The campaign will continue across Zunheboto district until November 30 through targeted outreach activities aimed at reaching farmers at the grassroots level.
