DIMAPUR, JUL 14 (NPN): Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) has urged deputy commissioner, Kohima, to make local census registration mandatory for all residents living in Kohima, stating that the issue was of urgent civic and administrative importance.
In a representation to DC, KVYO president Mhasimhalie Mathew Yhome and general secretary Vikuonyü Solo stated that while Kohima, as the state capital, provided civic amenities, public resources and welfare benefits to all residents, many who had made Kohima their primary place of residence and livelihood were allegedly circumventing local census registration.
KVYO said this practice would not only lead to demographic misrepresentation but also place an undocumented burden on the city’s resources. It maintained that those benefiting from residing in Kohima should be accurately reflected in the local census. It demanded mandatory census registration for all persons and sought a verification drive to ensure that civic benefits and welfare schemes were allocated based on accurate local census data.
It further said that if residents failed to register their census in Kohima, it would oppose their continued access to welfare schemes, subsidies and civic privileges. “We cannot support the distribution of city resources to those who refuse to be officially counted as part of its population,” it stated. KVYO urged the deputy commissioner to take immediate action by issuing necessary directives to ensure compliance and safeguard the administrative integrity of Kohima.
