DIMAPUR, MAY 26 (NPN): Office of the Labour Commissioner, Nagaland has directed all employers, industries, establishments, contractors and other stakeholders in the state to adopt preventive and precautionary measures to safeguard workers from the adverse effects of heatwave conditions.
According to DIPR report, the department informed that the Ministry of Labour & Employment, vide D.O. letter dated April 20, 2026, had advised all States and Union Territories to take proactive measures for safeguarding workers and labourers during periods of extreme heat and high temperatures.
In this regard, the department stated that it had become necessary to ensure occupational safety, health and welfare of workers engaged in various sectors across the state.
The department requested all employers, occupiers, industries, establishments, contractors, construction agencies, factories, brick kilns and other stakeholders to strictly comply with the measures during the heatwave season.
On working hours and scheduling, the department stated that working hours should, wherever feasible, be re-scheduled to avoid exposure during peak heat hours. It stated that heavy and strenuous work should preferably be carried out during cooler parts of the day, while employers should ensure flexibility in work schedules and adequate rest intervals.
The department also directed employers to provide adequate safe and cool drinking water facilities, rest sheds, shaded areas and cooling arrangements at workplaces and worksites.
On health and safety measures, the department stated that emergency first-aid materials, including ice packs and heat illness prevention kits, should be readily available at workplaces. It also stated that workers showing symptoms of heat stress, dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke should immediately be provided medical attention and assistance.
Further, the department directed employers and contractors to create awareness among workers regarding symptoms of heat stress, dehydration and preventive measures through awareness programmes, posters, banners and safety advisories.
The department stated that the circular would come into force with immediate effect and remain operative during the heatwave season or until further orders.
