DIMAPUR, AUG 19 (NPN): A major landslide along National Highway-702A at New Colony, Zunheboto town, on Wednesday damaged three houses that had been evacuated earlier as a precautionary measure, disrupting vehicular movement and raising concerns over further ground movement.
According to a DIPR report, the three houses located in the vicinity had been evacuated before the landslide. The buildings were subsequently completely damaged by the slide. The timely evacuation helped prevent any loss of life or injury.
One other building in the area has reportedly developed visible cracks following the landslide, raising concerns over the safety and stability of structures in the vicinity.
The landslide brought a substantial volume of earth and debris onto the highway, affecting normal vehicular movement along the NH-702A stretch and prompting authorities to take measures to ensure public safety and assess the damage.
Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert and exercise caution, particularly in areas showing signs of ground movement or structural damage.
However, no loss of life had been reported in connection with the incident. Further assessment of damage to buildings, road infrastructure and surrounding areas is expected as officials continue to monitor the situation.
Relief distributed: Meanwhile, deputy commissioner (DC) Zunheboto Dharam Raj distributed relief packages from the Indian Red Cross Society to families affected by the landslide.
The relief assistance was provided as part of the immediate response to support affected families with essential supplies. DC also interacted with the families and assured them of necessary assistance and support from the district administration.
NH-702A stretch closed: In a separate travel advisory, DC Zunheboto announced the temporary closure of the Zunheboto-Mokokchung road along NH-702A at New Colony due to road damage caused by the landslide amid incessant rain.
The road would remain closed until further orders, with traffic regulations being enforced at the affected stretch.
All heavy vehicles, including loaded trucks and pickups, as well as light and commercial vehicles travelling between Zunheboto and Mokokchung have been diverted through the Old Mokokchung Road/Check Post Road.
The public and commuters have been urged to strictly follow the advisory, traffic signage and instructions issued by officials deployed at the site and cooperate with the authorities until the road was restored.
