Landslide Near Ngopa Hospital Triggers Emergency Evacuations in Mizoram

A major landslide struck Ngopa village in Saitual district, Mizoram, on Monday, forcing the urgent evacuation of hospital staff and patients after debris surged dangerously close to the local health facility.

According to reports, the landslide began around 10:30 a.m. and intensified by 2 p.m., sweeping away a residential home and a nearby workshop. While no casualties have been reported, three other homes have been deemed unsafe, prompting concerns about broader structural vulnerability in the area.

Hospital authorities responded swiftly, relocating admitted patients to safer locations. Critical equipment, including supplies from the Outpatient Department (OPD) and the hospital kitchen, was also moved as a precaution.

Eyewitnesses and local residents have attributed the landslide to recent road-cutting activities allegedly undertaken by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). They claim that the excavation weakened the hillside, leaving it susceptible to collapse amid ongoing monsoon rains.

The incident has reignited concerns over construction practices and their impact on the region’s fragile terrain. As the monsoon intensifies, residents are urging swift intervention to ensure safety and prevent further damage.
