Landslide threatens homes in Wka

WOKHA, JUL 14 (NPN): Lower Etsuchukha Colony in Wokha has once again been hit by a slow‑moving landslide, with continuous ground subsidence damaging property, threatening homes and forcing several families to evacuate as the monsoon intensifies.
Residents said the landslide has persisted since around 2020, gradually worsening over the years. At least two houses have already been swept away, while several families have shifted to safer locations. However, many continue to remain in their homes, citing lack of alternatives and financial constraints.
Most houses in the colony have developed cracks, with structures becoming uneven as the ground beneath them sinks. Floors have tilted, bathrooms washed away, and livestock sheds destroyed, while the advancing slide has reached within metres of kitchens and living areas.
Residents alleged that officials had earlier visited the colony to assess damage and collected bank details of affected families, but no compensation has been received to date. They said retaining walls and temporary repairs carried out over the years are no longer sufficient to prevent further ground movement.
Colony chairman Yilobemo Humtsoe said around 10 houses have been severely affected, while nearly every household has been impacted in some way. He appealed to the government and concerned departments to conduct an immediate assessment and provide assistance before the situation worsens.
With heavy monsoon rainfall continuing across the state, residents expressed fear that further land movement could result in collapse of more homes if timely intervention is not taken.
