Two separate landslide incidents triggered by incessant rainfall have caused significant damage in Mokokchung district, leaving families in distress and prompting calls for immediate assistance.
On September 14, a devastating landslide struck Ayutemjen Chungtia, Aongza Ward, at around 8 p.m., completely destroying House (No. 290). The structure, comprising five rooms and two kitchens, collapsed due to water accumulation within the soil. Although no casualties were reported, the occupants were unable to salvage any belongings. The estimated loss, including property and cash, is pegged between Rs. 5–10 lakh, excluding the cost of constructing a retaining wall. Tension cracks were also observed in the remaining portion of the house, raising fears of further damage.
In another incident, a massive landslide occurred at Upper Penli Ward, obstructing public movement and blocking the main entrance of House (No. 20), which now stands on the verge of collapse.
The continuous downpour has heightened concerns over structural safety in the area.
District administration officials, led by Neithozo, NCS, EAC (HQ), inspected both sites and advised the affected families to seek assistance from the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) and the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).
Imtiyapang, MMC councillor of Aongza Ward, has appealed to the district administration and the public to extend support to the affected families. “We urge the community to come forward and support our brothers and sisters in this difficult time,” he stated.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable zones to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall continues to pose risks of further landslides and damage.
