Zhavame Village celebrated the Laoni Festival on July 21 with great enthusiasm and participation, organised by the Zhavame Village Tourism Board and supported by the Village Council, VDB, Women Society, Youth Society, Students’ Union and the community.
Festival Guest, Tito K Yeptho, President of Dimapur District Auto Drivers’ Union (DDADU), spoke on the historical bond between the Sumi and Chakhesang communities.
He urged that this brotherhood be preserved through unity in both good and difficult times and encouraged youth to explore livelihoods including auto-driving.
Western Sumi Youth Front President, Atokiho Sema also appreciated Zhavame’s hospitality during the NSF General Assembly in 2019 and called for continued cultural ties and mutual cooperation between communities.
The programme was chaired by Athe Rhi, executive member, Zhavame Tourism Board and Invocation by Medovi Shupao, Youth Director, Zhavame Baptist Church.
Highlights included a folk tune performance by Women Society, a talk on the significance of Laoni Festival by Rapri Pohena, a special number by Mengu Suokhrie and symbolic Rikhure Presentation by Duume Clan. Recreational events such as tug-of-war, bamboo climbing and volleyball were also held.
Laoni Festival remains an important celebration of heritage and community unity.
