A memorial service of late Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire on his 50th death anniversary was held at D. Khel Kohima on Wednesday, organized by the family members.
Friends and grandchildren of Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire, including the administrator Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) spoke on the occasion.
Rev. Keviyiekielie Linyü shared the word of God while the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire presented welcome song. Pastor BRC Kohima Rev. Khrieneilie Sachü read the Gospel word and said the invocation prayer.
Born in 1900, Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire was the third son of late Virielie and Tsozhieü Tseikha Kire. He also held the record of becoming the first Naga matriculate in 1918.
Some of Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire contributions to the society included paying salary to Heirelung of Benreu village, the first Zeliang missionary. After the World War II, Dr. N Kire and his friend late Neingulie Angami called on the elders of Dapfiitsumia Khel to dig the D Khel playfield (first playground in Kohima village) after taking permission from the land owners.
During 1945-46, Dr. N Kire called the few literate men of Kohima village and decided to open an LP school in each Khel. The salaries of the teachers were raised by collecting four annas (25 paise) per household. Later, the Government took over the schools. He also became the chairman of Kohima Village Panchayat. He also served as vice chairman Kohima Town Committee for 11 years (1956-1967).
Late Dr. N Kire was also a member of the Kohima GHS managing board, Kohima aided ME school, district soldiers, sailors and airmen board.
He was also the chairman of the founding fathers, who established Kohima Science College and also the chairman of the founding fathers when the Kohima Arts College was established.
Late, Dr. N Kire also opened a pharmacy in Kohima to attend the sick and poor. He passed away in Jorhat Mission Hospital on May 14, 1969 and his mortal remain was brought home for burial on May 15, 1969.
