Nestlé India Ltd, in collaboration with the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), launched a four day “Serve Safe Food” programme on Tuesday at the office of the chief medical officer, Dimapur. The event was graced by deputy commissioner Dimapur Tinojongshi Chang as the chief guest.
A total of 45 participants took part in the programme, which included one lead trainer and four guests of honor namely, deputy commissioner of police, Khusha Keyho, head of street food programme NASVI, Sangeeta Singh, district programme officer, Rongsennungla and district officer Dimapur, Peliereno.
In his keynote address, Chang highlighted the significance of street food, both for the vendors’ livelihoods and public convenience. He acknowledged that not everyone secures government employment and stressed the importance of entrepreneurship through street vending.
He underscored hygiene as a crucial first impression for any vendor and encouraged them to take advantage of the PM SVANidhi scheme. He also emphasized the importance of responsible waste disposal and cleanliness in public spaces.
Sangeeta Singh shared insights from their nationwide training efforts, affirming that this programme is not a one-time initiative but will be followed by monitoring and support. “Your shop is your office,” she reminded the participants, encouraging them to treat every customer with the care reserved for family.
Rongsennungla discussed the link between food safety and public health. She educated vendors on foodborne diseases and the importance of hygiene. She also stressed the need for proper waste segregation using two bins, one for dry and the other for wet waste.
Peliereno, urged vendors to use fresh ingredients and ensure water used in food preparation is potable. She warned against the use of newspapers in food service due to cancer risks and advised all vendors to secure medical certificates before opening food stalls. Additionally, she stressed the importance of FSSAI registration for all street vendors.
The Serve Safe Food programme will culminate on July 18.
