KOHIMA, OCT 19 (NPN): The Leiriechazou Youth Organisation (LCYO), Kohima, Sports Meet 2026 commenced at Kigwema Local Ground on Sunday under the theme, “Unite Through Sports: Different Team; One Community.”
Kohima Town Assembly Constituency MLA, Dr. Tsielhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso, who graced the inaugural programme as the chief guest, emphasised the importance of unity and sportsmanship in strengthening community bonds and promoting development.
Highlighting Kohima’s diverse population, Rhutso said sports had the power to unite people across tribal, religious and social differences. He noted that the spirit of coexistence among localities such as Leiriechazou could serve as an example for other communities.
He observed that sports instilled important values such as dedication, commitment, resilience and respect for opponents. Stressing that participation and sportsmanship were as important as winning, he said sporting events provided opportunities to build friendships, strengthen social relationships and foster community development.
Encouraging youths to pursue academic excellence, Rhutso acknowledged the significant role of parents in shaping their children’s achievements. He also urged young people to refrain from harmful habits, particularly tobacco consumption, citing its adverse effects on health and finances.
The MLA further cautioned against allowing political differences to strain personal and community relationships. He observed that elections were held once every five years and should not become a reason for lasting enmity among people.
Referring to the 2028 general elections, Rhutso expressed his intention to contest, while reaffirming his commitment to serving society. He also acknowledged that his current tenure had been constrained by the lack of a portfolio.
Earlier, Leirie Chazou Panchayat chairman Petevilie Livi delivered a short speech, while LCYO president Keneizekho Sopfü delivered the welcome address. Vincent Phimu presented a special song, and Sports Committee convenor Hubert Aba administered the oath. The inaugural programme was chaired by Josephine Phemu, statistical secretary of LCYO, while Andrew Thong of Faith Harvest Church, South Campus, Leiriechazou, pronounced the opening prayer.
The sports meet will feature basketball, football and volleyball competitions among the colony’s three sectors. Other events, including tug-of-war and arm wrestling, will also be held for both men and women.
