Lemsachenlok, Longleng in collaboration with Kalpavriksh & ICCA Consortium, South Asia observed the World environment Day on June 5, at Bhümyü Village under the Universal theme “Solutions to Plastic Pollution” on Monday.
The event was graced by Sr. SP Longleng Dr. Pritpal Kaur Batra as special guest and special invitee Neema Pathak Broome secretary, Kalpavriksh & ICCA Consortium, South Asia.
In her speech, Dr Pritpal mentioned that God has given heaven to the Nagas of Nagaland with the rich forest and agricultural land and called upon the people to thank Him and do justice by preserving it.
While stating that Nagas generally has the ability to do almost everything, she however, lamented that with the rise of technology, the youth and younger generation were losing the dignity of labor and were so much attached with mobile phones and unable to perform well.
Therefore, she urged the people of Phom community and Nagas in general to learn the division of labor from cultivating, processing and market linkage. This can happen only when Nagas learn to work as a team and also learn scientific method of farming, she added.
In her brief speech, Neema Pathak Broome spoke about the great works Lemsachenlok has been doing since the past decade. Lauding the initiatives of Lemsachenlok, she called upon the people to be thankful for the great changes and encouraged them to come forward and collaboratively work towards improving the environment, conservation of the natural resources and plant more trees.
“Our actions today are important because it might have negative impact in the near future if we do not follow reduce, reuse and recycle,” she added.
In his address, chairman and team leader Lemsachenlok Nuklu Phom urged the gathering to strive towards creating an improved environment and also stressed on the theme “Solutions to plastic Pollution” by following the 3R’s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. He also exhorted the people on the essence of the occasion.
On the occasion, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kalpavriksh & ICCA consortium, South Asia and Lemsachenlok was signed for further collaboration in the areas of Indigenous Biodiversity Conservation and Empowering Community Livelihood and Sustainability. Another MoU between Lemsachenlok and Yingli College Longleng was signed for collaboration on interdisciplinary research, integrating ecological and conservation related research in Longleng district. Lemsachenlok also distributed equipment like trapped cameras, binoculars, tree saplings and green house materials to some few villages associated with LEMSACHENLOK.
Others who addressed the gathering virtually included– Supongnukshi (IFS) CCF, Environment, Forest & Climate Change department, Dr. Suresh Kumar, Sr. Scientist Wild Life Institute, Dr. Samadangla Ao Asst. professor, Dept. of Botany Kohima Science College.
Dr. Henshet Phom, vice principal, Yingli College and Dr. Wati Imchen Principal Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung also addressed the gathering.
Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Bhiimnyu VC chairman S. Angam, invocation by Rev. Mongmei, Pastor Bhiimnyu Baptist Church and ‘voice from the community’ was delivered by Nokthai Yongshei Village Council chairman, benediction by Balong, pastor Auching Baptist church. The program was chaired by Susan coordinator Leamsachenlok and vote of thanks pronounced by Watikala, Lemsachenlok.
