Lotha Hoho (LH) has voiced strong displeasure over the prolonged irregular power supply and complete blackout that has plagued Wokha district for more than six consecutive days.
In a press release, LH, the apex body of the Lotha community, stated that while certain parts of Wokha town received partial electricity, the district as a whole endured a total blackout, causing severe hardship on residents.
The hoho stated that disruption has badly affected students preparing for examinations and severely hampered business operations across the district.
LH highlighted that Wokha district continued to suffer without electricity for nearly a week despite the existence of double feeder transmission lines—one at Sanis Town and another at Wokha Town—meant to provide alternative supply in case of transformer damage or breakdown. Compounding the crisis, the hoho noted that Wokha town headquarters has been without proper water supply for over two and a half months, leaving many submersible pumps non-functional due to the power outage.
In the light of the above, LH has demanded the power department to ensure that Wokha district must not experience such extended blackouts in the future, particularly given that Doyang Hydro Electric Project situated within the district, generates 75 MW of electricity. As Wokha ranks third in revenue collection from both commercial and domestic billing in Nagaland, LH said uninterrupted power supply must be ensured.
The hoho also urged the department to to maintain standby transformers for immediate replacement in case of breakdowns or damage.
The apex Lotha body strongly urged the power department to take prompt corrective measures and implement long-term safeguards to prevent recurrence of such failures.
