Libemo Memorial School, Wokha, in collaboration with Vision Eye Care Wokha, organised a workshop on August 13 on the theme “Visual Impairment and Visual Demands in School Children”, aimed at raising awareness on the critical role of eye health in effective learning.
Graced by EAC Probation Dr. Chuchong Noklang and EAC Probation Imtiyenla Chang as special guests representing the district administration, the programme featured Consultant Optometrist Y. Porenthung Odyuo of Vision Eye Care Wokha as the resource person.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Noklang commended the initiative, describing it as a vital step toward promoting healthy vision and a conducive learning environment. She emphasized that vision and hearing are foundational to cognitive and personality development, and warned of the increasing prevalence of visual impairment among children—exacerbated by rising screen time linked to digital learning and entertainment post-Covid. She advocated for early health checks, preventive measures, and lifestyle changes to safeguard children’s well-being.
EAC Imtiyenla Chang highlighted the impact of technological shifts on student health and stressed that vision care must be treated as a collective responsibility. She urged schools and communities to extend awareness efforts beyond classrooms and into homes and rural areas.
Consultant Optometrist Y. Porenthung Odyuo delivered a detailed session on common eye conditions, noting a sharp rise in childhood myopia due to reduced outdoor activity and prolonged screen exposure. He encouraged teachers to monitor early signs such as squinting or poor handwriting and to improve classroom environments with adequate lighting and seating. He also raised awareness on colour blindness, which often goes undetected but can hinder learning.
The programme concluded with an interactive session, allowing participants to gain deeper insights into vision care and its role in holistic education.
