Noah’s Ark Nagaland (NAN) on Sunday organized a live session on “Health & Wellbeing of your Pets” with owner of wagging tails, Dr. Ithika as guest. Speaking at the live session, Dr. Ithika highlighted the dos and don’ts for pet owners/lovers. He stressed at length on not feeding pets whatever was available at home as most human foods were not compatible for pets.
Dr. Ithika pointed out that chocolate was one of the foods which should not be fed to dogs as even a point 25 mg of chocolate for large dogs was toxic. He informed that chocolates had “theobromine content”, which dogs were unable to metabolise effectively.
The veterinary doctor also informed that raisins caused kidney problems in dogs and that human bread biscuits were also not advisable since they were high in sugar content.
In this regard, he said for new pet owners, general information could be answered on the internet such as the American Kennel Club, which was a trusted site.
He, however said that one should not only depend on the internet and if a pet was suffering from health problems that caused concerns, the pet owner should consult a doctor immediately.
Dr. Ithika also spoke at length on the importance of vaccination and deworming of pets. He informed that a dog should be dewormed 10 days before the vaccination since vaccinations can have a number of side effects and the dog may feel under the weather for a few days after his/her shot.
The live session saw participation from over 100 pet lovers who clarified their doubts with the veterinary doctor. The programme was hosted by Animal Activist and member of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Dimapur, Enyu Phom.
