Training programmes on the Livestock Insurance Scheme under the National Livestock Mission (NLM) 2025–26 were conducted in Mokokchung and Mon districts, aimed at equipping para-vets and farmers with knowledge on affordable livestock protection and financial security.
In Mokokchung, a one-day training was held at T.T Gardens, Tzusapang sector, organized by the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Office. Chief Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Officer, Dr. Tiachuba Jamir, in his opening address, informed that farmers wishing to avail the policy must register on the Bharat Pashudhan portal. He reiterated that 85% of the premium is subsidized by the government, while farmers contribute only 15%. Expressing hope that the training would benefit livestock farmers, he assured assistance from the CVO office in availing the policy.
Resource person Dr. Nemjemyanger Kubzari, Farm Manager, explained that livestock insurance provides financial protection against death, loss or damage from specified risks, and also enables farmers to access loan facilities. He guided participants on documentation, claim settlement, and outlined the types of animals covered, including pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, cattle, mithun and buffaloes. He also highlighted that the insurer, National Insurance Company Limited (NICL), is India’s oldest general insurance company, fully owned by the Government of India. The programme concluded with feedback and discussion between participants and officials.
Meanwhile, in Mon, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services organized a training programme at DRDA Hall on April 17. Addressing the programme, EAC Mon HQ, Kedoseno Rino, emphasized the importance of safeguarding livestock through insurance, noting that many farmers failed to take adequate steps to protect their animals.
