LM&CP checks on weights, measures

DIMAPUR, SEP 15 (NPN): Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP) department has directed traders, dealers, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, packers and others engaged in trade and commerce in Nagaland to strictly comply with provisions governing weights, measures and packaged commodities.
According to a DIPR report, the department said the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and other applicable laws and rules would be enforced strictly.
The department has ordered that all weighing and measuring instruments used for commercial transactions must be duly verified and stamped by the department within the prescribed period. It warned that unverified, unstamped, defective, unclean, non-standard or otherwise unsuitable instruments must not be used for trade.
The department also directed traders to use prescribed standard units and verified instruments for transactions involving goods sold by weight, measure or number.
The department stressed that pre-packaged commodities must carry all mandatory declarations under the Packaged Commodities Rules, including net quantity, maximum retail price (MRP) and the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, along with other required particulars.
Further, traders and dealers have been directed to maintain and produce licences, certificates, verification records and other documents required under the applicable laws and rules.
It said practices resulting in short delivery, incorrect weighing or measurement or any other violation of legal metrology provisions have been prohibited. The department said the directions would take immediate effect.
It said that legal metrology officers would conduct inspections and enforcement activities across the state to monitor compliance. Violations detected during inspections would be dealt with in accordance with the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and other applicable laws and rules, including penalties and proceedings.
The department has, threfore, urged all traders and dealers to ensure full compliance and cooperate with officials during inspections and enforcement activities.
