Even as the state government constituted a search committee for identifying candidates to be considered for appointment as Lokayukta Nagaland, the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) has warned the state government “not to commit the same mistake while selecting a person for Lokayukta or Upa-Lokayukta”.
NVCO through its media cell said committing such “mistake” would amount to playing with the highest institution in the state.
It also warned politicians “not to lobby for their own candidate if at all they support the institution to truly function as per the Act”.
Maintaining that the Lokayukta and its role in Nagaland needed to be strengthened, the organisation has therefore urged the state government to select the right person
For the post of Upa-Lokayukta, NVCO claimed the Naga people did not want retired government servant, bureaucrats, technocrats, etc.
It also said that Lokayukta should not be someone “having record of corrupt practices and pending cases against them with scam or political party affiliation”.
While stating that the main objective of Lokayukta was to curb the menace of corruption, NVCO said that it was essential that the three pillars of democracy—legislature, judiciary, and executives were strong in structure and un-corrupted.
NVCO has appealed to the public to “come forward to voice for strong Lokayukta in Nagaland” in order to let the state government select the right person.
