Four Longleng-based organisations on Monday said they have resolved to lift the economic blockade on NH-702 (Longleng-Changtongya road) following an assurance given by the PWD (NH) department and Gayatri-Maytas company that their grievances would be addressed and the road (Longleng-Changtongya) would be continuously maintain till the actual work resumed.
In a joint press release, LDDU president O. Alemtetba Phom, CCI Longleng president B.Shamkai Phom, LTSU president A. Angmau Phom and LTWU president L.Chuba Phom stated that the assurance was made at a consultative meeting with the concerned department led by Lima Ao, superintending engineer (NH) circle 1, Kohima; Chubatoshi executive engineer (NH) Mokokchung division and the representative of M&G company project manager Vinod Kumar Reddy, at DC’s conference hall on June 11, 2016.
They said the manager also gave “full assurance” to provide additional machineries at the earliest.
The four bodies have, however, cautioned that on the failure of the company to carry out the maintenance work, they would be compelled to “reinitiate” any course of action till the matters were addressed.
Meanwhile, the signatories said phase-II agitation, which included a 48-hour economic blockade on NH-702, closure of government offices, non-movement of private and government vehicles and shutdown of business establishment, culminated on Monday.
The phase-II agitation was peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incidents, they said.
The protest was launched immediately after the expiry 15 days extension allotted to the Gayatri-Maytas company and the concerned department. It was also the result of the company’s inability to fulfil its assurance of deploying sufficient manpower and machineries for the maintenance of the road.
