Educational institutions across Wokha district solemnly observed Black Day on April 14, as notified by the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU), with schools holding silent prayers in honour of the martyrs as a mark of respect.
The observance was held in remembrance of late Chumdamo Tungoe of Phiro village and late Thungkhomo Ezung of Longsa village, who laid down their lives on April 14, 1977, during a tragic incident of police firing at a peaceful procession organised by the Union.
In compliance with the notification, students and teachers gathered in unity to offer silent prayers, reflecting on the martyrs’ sacrifice and the enduring values of justice, freedom and equality.
As part of the observance, LSU officials visited the families and resting places of the departed, where wreaths were laid on behalf of the Union. This was followed by a prayer service invoking God’s peace upon their souls and strength for the bereaved families.
The Union expressed profound gratitude for the sacrifice of the martyrs and reaffirmed that LSU stands as a living memorial to the cause for which they made the ultimate sacrifice. It also assured the families of its continued solidarity and support, stating that their sacrifice would remain forever honoured in the annals of the Union.
Meanwhile, on April 13, LSU executive members carried out a social work initiative at the Martyrs’ Park Memorial as part of the pre-observance activities.
The district-wide observance was conducted peacefully.
