DIMAPUR, JUL 4 (NPN): Breaking his silence on the June 30 vandalism incident, Prysm Lounge owner and Dimapur Restaurant Union (DRU) president Tito Yepthomi has alleged assault, threats, and intimidation.
Speaking to the media Saturday, Tito said there had been no prior personal communication with the alleged accused, Katho P. Awomi, finance secretary of Naga Students’ Federation, but claimed that he (Katho) had repeatedly contacted his manager and visited several establishments in the days before the incident, allegedly pressuring shops to close.
He noted that similar visits were made to five or six other businesses, describing the actions as deeply hurtful.
Tito clarified that the DRU’s June 28 resolution to extend financial assistance to NSF was voluntary and collectively decided by over 30 members.
He said the contributions were made out of goodwill, despite many restaurants struggling to pay rent and salaries.
According to him, when he personally approached Katho to hand over the contribution, it was refused, and vandalism followed.
Recounting the June 30 incident, Tito alleged that four individuals entered his lounge, one armed with a baseball bat.
He claimed he was grabbed by the collar, spat on, threatened with broken hands and even death, while three of his security guards were assaulted. Though confirming four people were involved, he refrained from naming others.
On speculation about withdrawing the FIR lodged at East Police Station, Tito said the matter involved the entire DRU and should be left to the police. He admitted there had been suggestions to settle the issue amicably but insisted he would not withdraw the FIR.
Highlighting the struggles of Dimapur’s restaurants, Tito said they employ many local youth, with owners often taking loans or selling land to start businesses.
He acknowledged the NLTP Act makes liquor sales illegal but declined further comment. Stressing that the incident was not a personal dispute, he maintained he was standing for the union and its members.
